AUSTRALIA DAY 2011
Behold the new hero!
Australia’s most decorated soldier
Only 32 and oh, so tall and brave.
Every battle, he views as a football game
With no rules other than kill or be killed.
He looks after his mates, naturally
None of them are yellow,
Red, black or brown.
His father was a general before he became famous
His destiny was shaped
By the ugly tradition of nepotism.
Our hero killed in Iraq
He slaughtered more bad guys in Afghanistan
Earning the accolades of the Governor General
Who was proud to pin the medal
On his inflated chest.
Our hero fought for the Allies, the Coalition
The Collapsing Western War Machine
These days the bad guys are called ‘Taliban’
Our soldiers call them ‘towel-heads’
Revelling in their humiliation.
“Take that, bad-guy”, whoever you are,
“You’re not with us so you must be with them
We will liberate your women and children by killing
Their insolent, insurgent husbands, brothers and sons.
We of the Special Armed Services are crack shots
Our guns will beat yours, anytime.
The super-duper suits we wear may be hot
But they save lives if and when we’re shot.”
Today’s the day to celebrate
The history of our troubled land
Perhaps a day to reflect on militarism
Not genuflect, yet again, to the war machine.
NOT MUCH OF AN ADVANCE, AUSTRALIA
In joyful tones the nation sings its anthem
Memorised since infancy
Advance Australia Fair
But doesn’t fair mean white
And didn’t we have a White Australia Policy
Not long ago?
The second verse reveals the truth
And the lie of a fair-go for all
“For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share...”
Somehow hard to believe
The bards who penned the song
Envisioned dark skinned people
In little fishing boats
Being locked up for ‘processing’
If they sail across the Indian Ocean
With courage and determination
To reach our fair land.
Seeking a safe place,
pleading for asylum.
The bards who wrote
What became our national anthem
Knew they were superior
Because of the colour of their skin.
Their masters had already experimented
With Chinese they called ‘coolies’
And Indians they called ‘blacks’
They were determined to send the others
The ‘kanakas’ – the ‘boys’ back where they came from.
So what, if they’re eaten by cannibals?
Blacks are worthy only to serve as slaves
For the consumers, anyway.

OPIUM
I’m thinking about opium
Though I’ve never tried the stuff
I’m thinking about the empires
That forced our people to grow
Poppies to addict the Chinese
In the interests of Free Trade
For the sole benefit
Of the great powers,
The empires on which the sun never sank.
1842 is not so long ago
Though Hong Kong was returned
A while back, now.
And the Rise of China
Attributed to capitalism
By the capitalists
And to Mao
By the Maoists
And to Confucius by the
Confused
Mad, crazy, deluded darkies
Demanding equality
And the fall of empire
With its empirical thinking and dubious statistics
And evidence-based propaganda
With its ‘Third World’ and ‘Second World’
And ‘Security Forces’
Euphemisms for exploited nations and the mercenaries
Who enforce the Free World’s Will.
Yes China was treated badly
By the British, French, Russians and Yanks
The Great Dragon remained oppressed
When the Yanks designed the biggest tanks
With expertise from Nazis and those who denied
Their recent war crimes, though they lied
Through their mercury fillings.
Here in the Antipodes
Paranoia ran riot
Was it the blacks who were coming,
The yellow or brown?
Was the Reds?
We heard they were hiding
Around every corner
Under every bed
Hidden in the cupboards
With the other skeletons
In university museums.
So when Tasmania was selected
To grow the Free World’s opium
For Glaxo and the others
Who craft International Drug Laws
To serve their pecuniary interests.
The blinded populace supports
Sending our young men
(paying them well, of course)
To provide expert advice
On how to raze the plains of Afghanistan
Without killing too many people
White people, that is.
The locals, well, if they’re not the enemy
The just inevitable collateral damage.
The Free World must be protected, after all.
And heroin is an inevitable part of life
In the Free World....
Though maybe not the Real World.
